Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

At Revive Orofacial Therapy and Wellness Center, we believe that adverse myofunctional habits can contribute to several treatable conditions. Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy consists of exercises, muscular behavioral techniques, and redirection of neuromuscular pathways that are meant to improve the strength, resting position, tone, and habits of the facial and oropharyngeal muscles, including the tongue. This treatment can restore the function of the mouth and it can also improve clarity of the airway while asleep. Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy can improve sleep apnea symptoms, help TMD symptoms, encourage proper jaw growth in children, and energize your life by allowing you to rest peacefully.

Benefits of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy:

  • Reinforce the proper position of the tongue within the mouth.

  • Reinforces proper nasal breathing and helps eliminate mouth breathing.

  • Decreases ADHD-type symptoms.

  • Can help reduce occurrence of nighttime bed-wetting

  • Can help decrease or eliminate clenching and/or grinding (bruxism).

  • Helps counteract malocclusion. Movement of teeth can occur when the tongue pushes against them, when it is not placed in the proper area to combat buccal (cheek) pressure, or when the mentalis (chin muscle) is overactive.

  • Decreases snoring and daytime sleepiness. When the muscles of the oropharynx are weak, they may disrupt the flow of air and snoring may ensue.

  • Can decrease sleep apnea severity. A weak tongue may fall back into the airway, causing an obstruction and possibly contributing to Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is an attractive alternative treatment for sleep apnea. Non-invasive, inexpensive (when compared to other sleep treatments) and has no major risks.

  • May benefit those who suffer from headaches.

  • May benefit those who suffer from GERD or heartburn.

  • Can help eliminate TMJ pain.

  • May benefit those who suffer from neck pain.

  • Can help eliminate thumb/finger/object sucking.

  • Can help eliminate nail biting habit.

  • Can help eliminate tongue thrusting.
